Tartu is home is home to Estonia's oldest and most renowned university. Walk along the student crowded street of this beautiful city and discover Tartu's rich cultural history. The university is worth a stop for its student's prison.
Tallinn Out There will take you to the University, founded by Sweden King Gustav Adolf in 1632.. Teaching in the university was interrupted in 1699 because of the wars and only in 1802 it was opened again. This main buliding was opened in 1809. It was designed by Wilhem Krause. Concerts are held in its assebly hall and the Museum of Ancient Arts has been housing in this building since 1803. . It's a very beautiful white building with Doric portico. Do not miss the student's prison at the top.
The Cathedral and Toome Hill
The building of the Dome Cathedral started in XIII century and finished in XV. During Reformation and Livonian war the cathedral was destroyed. The bonfire in 1642 made the last destroying. In 1807 in the room for choirs the library was founded. The library was there till 1982. Now there is the museum of the history of the University. On Toome Hill, you will find many statues of famous teachers or scientits like Baer and a pagan stone where students celebatre and burn their notes after passing their exams!
The statue of the two Wildes
The statue of two Wildes seems to be a popular place for tourists to stop and take photos. Get a toast to Oscar Wilde and Estonian writer Eduard Wilde! These two writers lived at the same time but never met.
The Leaning House
It is the house of end of XVIII century. Maybe the house could be nothing special, but the most interesting thing - it is leaning. That happened because of this: one wall of the building was built on the foundation of old defensive city wall and another - on wooden piles. The structure was different for both sides of building, so one side has leaned.
Angel's bridge
Angel's Bridge was built in 1836-1838. the formation of bridge very interesting - in real it should be "English bridge", as all Dome hill park was made in English style as well, but, because of words confusion (in Estonian angel is "ingel", English is "inglise"), it is always called Angel bridge. Another bridge near Angle Bridge is Devils Bridge. They both look contrary to each other. Angel Bridge is made from brighter colors, Devils Bridge is dark. The last construction of Devils Bridge took place in 1913 (to commemorate the 300th jubilee of the Romanovs Dynasty in former Tsarist Russia). The name of bridge is confusing as well, because in real the name was taken from one bridge in Switzerland. Another reason is that the bridge builder's name was Mannteuffel (in German Teufel is devil).
St John's church
St. John church in Tartu was built in 14th century. Maybe it not looks very impressive as a Gothic style object, but it is famous and quite rare in Europe because of terracotta sculptures. In Tartu central part it is only the one functioning Lutheran church. I haven't opportunity to see interior of this church, but I guess it should be nice. What is more, church has platform to watch panorama of Tartu.
Old Tartu Observatory and Struve Monument.
Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve, astronomer gave birth to the Struve Arc which is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, through 10 countries and over 2,820 km. These are points of a survey, carried out between 1816 and 1855 by the astronomer Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve, which represented the first accurate measuring of a long segment of a meridian. This helped to establish the exact size and shape of the planet and marked an important step in the development of earth sciences and topographic mapping.
